The evening of November 28 marks the beginning of Hanukkah, an 8-day festival of lights to commemorate the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
Hanukkah, also commonly known as Chanukah, is celebrated in honour of Jews defeating their oppressors in 165BCE after their religion had been banned and their Holy Temple desecrated. When the Jews regained possession of the Holy Temple, the one-day supply of olive oil to light a menorah in their temple lasted for eight days instead. Since then, Hanukkah has symbolized the miracles that can take place as a result of faith, courage, and dedication.
Hanukkah is celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers, gifts, games and enjoying traditional foods. This year’s celebrations are particularly special as Hanukkah can once again be celebrated in-person with safety precautions in place; a comfort that we can all be grateful for this holiday season.
