ACOs – who we are and what we do
OPSEU/SEFPO Ambulance Communications Officers (ACOs) and Ornge Communications Officers (COs) work directly to support Ontario’s emergency medical transportation system. We are the vital link in the chain of survival and play an integral role in first response.
We are part of a provincial network of Central Ambulance Communications Centres (CACCs), Ambulance Communications Services (ACS), and Ornge’s Operations Control Centre (OCC), each with distinct but complementary responsibilities.

CACCs and ACS
- Receive and prioritize 911 medical calls Dispatch land ambulances
- Provide life-saving pre-arrival instructions
- Coordinate emergency medical responses Ensure patients are matched with appropriate transport resources
- We have over 750 members working in 15 centres across the province, connecting Ontarians to the emergency services they need every single day
OCC
- Coordinate the aviation, medical,
- operational, and logistical aspects of Ontario’s air ambulance and critical care land ambulance system
- Coordinate patient transport requests from CACCs/ACS, hospitals and nursing stations
