Elections for the positions of Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Members at Large and in some regions a Membership Secretary will take place. Please note that members at large are elected differently in different regions. If your region has a bank account, you will also need to elect 2-3 trustees.
It is further noted that your name must be on the Region Retired Membership list in your Region to run or vote for any elected position. If you or your local have not paid the once in a lifetime $10.00 fee to belong to the Retired Members Division, please do so before the meeting if you can. For individuals wishing to join and pay their fee in person, membership application will be available and accepted at the meeting. They are also available on the OPSEU/SEFPO website. May Retirees Meetings, Election will be a 2-year term!
As you are aware, OPSEU/SEFPO Executive board has moved to three years terms after a constitutional amendment passed at convention 2024. The amendment gave all divisions and locals the option to move to 3-year terms or stay at two-year terms, but they needed to amend their bylaws.
Your executive felt that 3-year terms would be easier to keep track of, so we decided to take it to you at our meetings. 5 regions voted yes to 3-year terms , 1 region voted no to 3-year terms and one region didn’t take it to their members. Because it wasn’t clear approval I needed to take it to the Presidents office for clarification.
Apparently if we want 3-year terms we will need to a second vote with a clear identical question at every meeting. The votes will need to be tallied and all sent in to be totaled together for a clear vote from the entire Division of meeting attendees.
As it will take until 2032 for our elections to line up again with the OPSEU/SEFPO board elections we have lots of time to decide what to do.
