Statement from the Coalition of Racialized Workers on International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

As we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, it is crucial to recognize that the call to action is more urgent than ever. Across the globe, we are witnessing a disturbing rise in far-right movements and the increasing normalization of racist rhetoric within political discourse. These developments not only sow seeds of fear and uncertainty but also deepen divisions within our communities, often targeting migrant and racialized populations who have historically borne the brunt of discrimination and hate. The far-right movement thrives on fear-mongering and scapegoating, creating a climate of social anxiety that erodes trust and solidarity among diverse communities. This ascendance of hate is not just an attack on individuals; it poses a significant threat to our democratic values and the rights of workers everywhere. The normalization of such rhetoric undermines the fundamental principles of equality, justice, and respect that are enshrined in modern democratic societies. In response to these pressing challenges, unions must intensify their efforts to combat racial discrimination. Unions have long been champions of social justice, equality, and workers’ rights, and now, more than ever, we need to prioritize the fight against all forms of discrimination and violence. By standing in solidarity with Black and racialized workers and migrant communities, we can counteract the forces of division and hatred that seek to undermine our unity. Here are a few ways we can take action:

1. Raise Awareness: Educate members and the broader community about the impacts of racism and the urgent need to address discrimination in all its forms.
2. Foster Inclusive Environments: Promote diversity and inclusion within our unions and workplaces, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.
3. Advocate for Policy Change: Push for legislative reforms that protect the rights of marginalized communities and hold accountable those who perpetuate hate.
4. Build Alliances: Collaborate with other organizations and movements in our community dedicated to social justice to amplify our collective impact.
5. Support Affected Communities: Engage in initiatives that directly support migrant and racialized communities, acknowledging their contributions and addressing their specific challenges.

Together, we can create a world where racial discrimination has no place. This International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, let us pledge to stand against hate and work towards a more just, inclusive, and equitable society for all. The time for action is now.
