Course Description
The Arbitration Process
After the grievance procedure has been exhausted, an unresolved grievance can be referred to the last stage to be decided at Arbitration. This Course is intended to inform Local Union activists regarding various elements of the process at an Arbitration Hearing in order to fully appreciate what occurs during the grievance procedure and how it affects the final outcome. Those selected for this Course will engage in a mixture of lecture-style review as well as role-play exercises. All the basic elements of what happens at an Arbitration Hearing will be reviewed.
Who Can Attend?
This Course is intended for Local Union Officers and Stewards who have taken BOTH the Basic Grievance Handling, and the Advanced Grievance Handling courses and have extensive grievance handling experience up to the final stages of the grievance procedure. Having previously attended Arbitration Hearings and/or Mediation would be an asset. Participants will be selected by the Region 2 Education Committee.
All applicants will be advised by email of their application status by early to mid-September. Successful applicants will receive overnight accommodation reservation information at that time and may submit an Advance Request via the Member Portal once registered.
Lost Wages
Members may apply to their Local to utilize the Local Time Off (80/20) fund to obtain time off to attend the course if the Local’s TARs are up to date. Local Time Off forms must be approved by two Local Executive Committee (LEC) members. Please note that LEC members cannot approve their own time off requests. Approved Expenses
Meals & Mileage in accordance with OPSEU/SEFPO Policy. Overnight accommodation will be reimbursed for attendees residing 60km or more from the course location. Parking is free at the Coopers Membership Centre.
