The hearts and thoughts of OPSEU/SEFPO members are with the people of Haiti who are coping with the aftermath of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake last week.
More than 14-hundred people have died and rescue teams are working around the clock to try to find survivors amid the widespread destruction. “We are very concerned for the people of Haiti”, said Peter Thompson Chair of the OPSEU/SEFPO Coalition of Racialized Workers (CoRW). “They have gone through a lot but they are strong and will recover from this disaster.”
Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. It faced another massive earthquake in 2010, has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and is in turmoil following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July.
OPSEU/SEFPO President Warren (Smokey) Thomas is saddened by this latest tragedy to hit the Caribbean nation. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti, and to our Haitian brothers and sisters at OPSEU/SEFPO,” said Thomas.
OPSEU/SEFPO First Vice President/Treasurer Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida says it’s impossible for him to look at the devastation and not be emotionally affected by it. “Seeing the images of the destruction in Haiti is heart wrenching, said Almeida. “I know all the members of our great union feel the same way.”
