The results are in. After a two-week onsite Public Sector Labour Relations Transitions Act (PSLRTA) campaign at the former Grand River, Freeport and St. Mary’s hospitals in the City of Kitchener, Diagnostic Imaging staff have overwhelmingly voted favour of joining OPSEU/SEFPO.
St. Mary’s General Hospital and Grand River Hospital Corporation merged on April 1, 2025 to form the new Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN). This result make OPSEU/SEFPO the official bargaining agent on behalf of 200 Technologists and Technicians in Diagnostic Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Cardio Diagnostics, Catheterization Lab and Pacemaker Departments at WRHN.
Technologists and Technicians are a critical part of the hospital ecosystem and OPSEU/SEFPO is honoured to advocate on their behalf moving forward.
Following this announcement, and by decision of the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) on April 9, 2026, OPSEU/SEFPO was also declared the bargaining agent for more than 300 Medical Laboratory employees at WRHN.
What happens next?
In the coming days, the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) will issue a decision declaring OPSEU/SEFPO the bargaining agent for all Technologists and Technicians at WRHN. Once this happens, OPSEU/SEFPO representatives, as required under PSLRTA legislation, will begin negotiating common provisions for all Technologists and Technicians at WRHN.
OPSEU/SEFPO will serve notice to bargain a new collective agreement that will cover all Technologist and Technician positions at WRHN. This process will include electing a bargaining team, building union structures, and ensuring workers’ voices are represented at the bargaining table.
All OPSEU/SEFPO members at WRHN can expect updates in the coming weeks about next steps.
