OPSEU/SEFPO’s leaders are stressing the importance of grassroots, member led communications.
President JP Hornick and First Vice-President Laurie Brown (formerly Nancekivell) stressed the importance of grassroots communications to roughly 100 OPSEU/SEFPO members gathered in Toronto today for Editors’ Weekend.
President Hornick told the gathering that there is incredible power when workers speak up together and build a shared narrative, and that it’s important OPSEU/SEFPO members are able to send that message.
“The skills you strengthen here can help you build your local, communicate with your community, tell the stories of members, speak confidently to the media and bring more workers into our fights.”
Brown said a changing media landscape is making it vital for OPSEU/SEFPO to rely on its own platforms and resources to get its message out within the membership and to the general public. She said that’s why the union invests in events like Editors’ Weekend.
“We want to equip you to help spread OPSEU/SEFPO’s story locally and to help communicate the importance of member engagement, which is transforming our union.”
The three-day symposium will feature outside experts and members of OPSEU/SEFPO’s top-notch communications staff who will share their expertise in areas ranging from writing to shooting video.
