OPSEU/SEFPO members working in our education system are sounding the alarm on how the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is reporting the number of violent incidents in schools for 2024/2025. For the second year in a row, the number of violent incidents in its schools have reportedly gone down despite front line workers facing increased violence in schools due to chronic underfunding that is threatening the future of public education across Ontario.
OPSEU/SEFPO Local 330 President Kelly Martin, representing educational assistants at the SCDSB spoke, with Barrie Today to call out how these numbers are being reported. “This is absolutely inaccurate, and not demonstrating the reality of the violent incidents in our school board,” said Martin in an interview. “The report further indicates either a lack of understanding or a lack of care for what the front-line workers endure every single day.”
