OPSEU/SEFPO stands in solidarity with the First Nation communities of Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong and joins their calls demanding an apology from Prime Minister Mark Carney for his deplorable comment “I can outlast her” in response to a Grassy Narrows activist protesting in the vicinity during his presser.
Carney made the remark during an announcement in Etobicoke on March 30, 2026, where other government elected officials including Doug Ford can be seen laughing after Carney’s insensitive comment. Mercury poisoning has devasted both communities for decades and has caused severe health complications including premature death for many.
Unacceptable remarks like these continue to perpetuate anti-Indigenous racism and another reminder that both the Carney and Ford governments are not committed to supporting Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong for the devastating impacts of mercury contamination in their communities.
OPSEU/SEFPO stands with Chief Sherry Ackabee of Grassy Narrows First Nation and Chief Roland Fisher of Wabaseemoong Independent Nations and their calls for an apology and their continued demand for fair compensation for their communities as a result of mercury poisoning for generations.
