War. Famine. Crime. Oppression. None of these scourges has stopped during the pandemic. But on World Refugee Day, June 20, it’s vital we recognize that the pandemic has made life even more dangerous for people seeking refuge from violence or persecution.
For refugees, travel is more difficult. Crossing borders is more complicated. And even once a refugee or family of refugees has arrived in a haven like Canada, they face racism, intolerance, and significant inequities in health, education, and social services.
For example, Education workers who belong to OPSEU/SEFPO report that refugees hoping to learn English are facing extra challenges because of the pandemic. Many don’t have access to the computer and Internet connection needed for online classes and have been forced to drop out.
It takes incredible courage and resilience to move your family to a safe country. As one of the wealthiest countries – and one of the wealthiest provinces – in the world, Canada and Ontario have a responsibility to invest properly in the supports and services refugees need.
It’s not only the right thing to do, it’s the best thing to do for Ontario. We all benefit from the strength, culture, skills, and know-how that refugees bring with them.
So on World Refugee Day, let’s commit to doing our part to helping the world’s 80 million refugees find new homes that are warm, welcoming, and safe.
In solidarity,
