Petition action: Urgent mental health supports for correctional workers

Content warning: This post contains mention of suicide.

OPSEU/SEFPO correctional workers are facing a mental health crisis. Since October 2021, at least nine of our correctional bargaining unit members have lost their lives to suicide. These deaths are tragic – and can be prevented if our members have access to more robust mental health supports. But there has been a lack of urgent action by Premier Doug Ford and the Ministry of the Solicitor General to address this crisis.

So now we’re taking matters directly to Queen’s Park – and we need your help!

Solidarity request: Circulate and sign our petition this summer!

Please circulate and sign our legislative petition to Queen’s Park demanding that the Ford government provide immediate access to mental health supports for correctional workers. Correctional Bargaining Unit members will present the petitions at Queen’s Park in October once the Legislature is back in session.

Queen’s Park requires original signatures on paper petitions – electronic copies are not accepted by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.

Deadline extended! Order your paper petitions and postage-paid return envelopes today!

Please fill out this form to order paper petitions – and we’ll also send postage-paid envelopes for you to send them back to OPSEU/SEFPO!

All you need to do is get the signatures from your OPSEU/SEFPO colleagues (and anyone else, including family and friends) and drop them in a mailbox as soon as possible. We’ll make sure all of your signed petitions are delivered to Queen’s Park this fall.

If you’d rather print the petition yourself, please make sure to print it on legal-sized paper (8.5″ x 14″) and send the originals back to to us at the address printed on the petition.

Please note – the deadline has been extended – please send back as soon as possible!

Your solidarity really makes a difference.

At the OPSEU/SEFPO Convention in 2024, more than 1,600 OPSEU/SEFPO members signed this petition in three days. Let’s see if we can get thousands more signatures this summer!
