Can you imagine if we had a provincial government that was just as enthusiastic about promoting mental health and wellness? But we don’t have that – not yet, anyway – so it is up to us to be compassionate to those who are struggling with addiction this week and every week.

Now Premier Ford is moving toward allowing airport bars to serve alcohol 24 hours a day and lift limits on how much alcohol can be brought into Ontario from other provinces. It’s clear that Mr. Ford wants Ontarians to drink.

The Ford government, unfortunately, is not helping with its policies that seem to prioritize alcohol consumption over everything else. We have all heard about Doug Ford’s failed buck-a-beer scheme, the breaking of The Beer Store contract so beer can be sold in corner stores and the legalization of tail gate parties.

This week we are marking National Additions Awareness Week. It’s a time to raise awareness of the complex issue of alcohol and other substance addiction. It’s also a time to learn more about addiction treatment, recovery and prevention.
The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction says the theme this year is “Stigma Ends with Me” and is meant to tackle the stigma of alcohol and substance abuse. Stigma is often a barrier to recovery for people who are struggling with addiction.
