Impact: News for OPSEU members at MPAC from your leadership team
Volume 13, Issue 1 – March 26, 2013
A planned failure?
Best-selling business author Harvey MacKay is quoted as saying "If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail." We can"t help wondering if this is the road MPAC wants to travel.
We are referring to, of course, management"s vague notion of having "accreditation"for MPAC employees. This concept isn"t new…MPAC wanted to bargain this issue in the last round of negotiations. They didn"t have a plan then, either.
Not surprisingly, MPAC management wants the union to wholeheartedly endorse this initiative without having any clue as to the details…any mention of funding, process, grandparenting, or even the long-term goal.
Unfortunately for MPAC, your union is not ready to give its stamp of approval until we see a strategic, cognitive, and well-thought-out plan for accreditation…that will actually be of benefit to our members.
Given MPAC"s track record in THAT department, we aren"t holding our collective breath.
Kudos Korner
"Padding" management
Imagine our surprise when we learned that the management side of the UMC all had sparkly new Apple iPads at our last meeting. This nice extravagance is a little hard to stomach because we"re pretty sure all the managers have MPAC-issued laptops at their disposal. That"s more than adequate for checking the odd e-mail.
Maybe they are honing their defence skills against aggressive union tactics with the latest apps from iTunes.
We don"t know what you said…but don"t say it again
Apparently management at one of our local offices decided that one of our members needed to be disciplined for some derogatory comments. Fair enough, we suppose, except for one small detail: when asked what these comments were, management didn"t know. Kudos (and an Amazing Kreskin Award) goes to these managers who can deem a comment offensive without having a clue what was said.
Know your contract
If you"re attending the BPS Conference in June, note that MPAC will hold an educational during the event to get you up close and personal with your contract.
Do you know what your collective agreement is? Do you have a copy of it? Have you ever wondered what is in your collective agreement and how to find information on different articles? Do you know how the collective agreement is structured? Are you confused by some of the terms used in it?
In the newly-revised version of the Contract Interpretation Course, members will receive advice and assistance in understanding the power of their collective agreement and how to interpret and enforce their contract.
Using interpretation guidelines developed through case law, participants will build the skills and confidence needed to understand and use their collective agreements. Activities will give participants an opportunity to review legislation, examine the importance of timelines, discuss case scenarios and debate some common clauses and what those clauses mean.
See you at Convention
MPAC will hold their Convention Caucus on Friday, April 26 at noon (location to be determined). We will e-mail our contacts when details are available.
Due to the exorbitant cost of providing lunch at the caucus, we will only provide gift cards to cover lunch costs.
