August 1 is Emancipation Day in Canada. The City of Kingston is hosting a community event to commemorate this Day, and we’re inviting members of OPSEU / SEFPO to attend in honour and recognition of the Black and Indigenous communities who live through the legacy of enslavement in Canada.
Key Details:
When: Saturday, August 1, 2026 from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
Where: Confederation Park (Rainy Day location at Memorial Hall, City Hall, 216 Ontario Street, Kingston).
Who: Anyone is welcome. Let’s meet at 12:15 pm in Confederation Park by the water fountain. Rain Location: Inside Memorial Hall.
What: Let’s wear what feel’s comfortable. This could include clothing that celebrates Black and Indigenous communities, OPSEU t-shirts, etc.

The event will include a flag – raising ceremony from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, followed by a community art exhibit from 1:30 to 3:30pm. This will include visual art, historical artifacts, interactive art installations, children’s activities, live music by a DJ, and food vendors offering Haitian, Burundian, Jamaican, Nigerian cuisine, and more.
