There are more than 12,000 paramedics in Ontario who respond to a total of approximately 1.8 million calls per year. That is a staggering number of high-speed ambulance trips, vital signs checked, IVs inserted and wounds dressed.
It’s demanding work, performed day and night, in all seasons, all across Ontario. From dense urban centers to remote rural hamlets, paramedics extend the reach of the health care system, bringing medical, technical and interpersonal skills to meet us in our moments of need. Often, their timely first response is the difference between life and death.
This year’s theme is “Improving Outcomes, Together.” It speaks to the interdependence of paramedics and patients, reminding us that healthy communities require healthy paramedics. Every day, paramedics save lives and Paramedic Services Week is an opportunity to express gratitude for their vital work, push for better pay and improved staffing, advocate for increased mental health supports, and to celebrate these highly trained, dedicated members of our community.
