This summer, you took action and signed a petition calling on Algoma University’s Board of Governors and President and Vice-Chancellor to reverse a one-year pause on admissions to Geography, History, Music, Sociology, and Visual Art.
More than 1200 students, faculty, staff and concerned community members took action: Algoma University is now recruiting for these important programs!
This is a win for students and for northern Ontario communities. And it couldn’t have happened without your support.
In May 2025, admissions to these programs were suspended abruptly, without an opportunity for meaningful input from community stakeholders and students or clear evidence for the decision.
We immediately raised the alarm bells about the impact this would have. Algoma University’s programs in Visual Art, Music, Sociology, Geography and History have shaped generations of creative and critical thinkers, contributed to impactful research, and have encouraged students to stay in the North who might otherwise have left. These programs also make important contributions to the civic and cultural life of Sault Ste. Marie and Northern Ontario, and cuts to education are felt throughout Northern Ontario.
Thank you for adding your voice and helping to defend post-secondary education. Faculty are now working hard to restore these programs and welcome students back to them all! We thank you in advance for your ongoing support as these five programs recover.
In solidarity,
Local 685 – Algoma University
