OPSEU/SEFPO is deeply saddened to learn of the exchange of gunfire that occurred near a Belleville synagogue yesterday evening. This terrifying incident near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue took place as many members of the Jewish community were gathering to observe Yom Kippur.
Everyone of us should be free to celebrate faith and gather with friends and family without worrying about violence or threats of violence. For this to happen in such close proximity to a place of worship and on this sacred day is deeply troubling and wholly unacceptable.
We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community and reaffirm our commitment to fostering a workplace and society where everyone can practice their faith, express their identity, and participate in community life free from fear, hatred, or intimidation.
To our Jewish members and staff: please know that you are valued, supported, and respected. At a time when acts of hate continue to affect communities across the country, we remain committed to dignity, inclusion, and the fundamental right of all people to gather, worship, and live safely.
