Today we recognize the dedication and hard work of professionals who provide childcare. The theme this year is, “Let’s Rethink Child Care: Together We Can Make It Better.”
This year marks the 13th Anniversary of the Child Worker and Early Childhood Education Appreciation Day. OPSEU is a proud sponsor of this day and supports the advocacy efforts of the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care. In Ontario today there are licensed spaces for only 1 in 5 children, licensed childcare costs upwards of $40-$60 per day, per child and many municipalities have long waiting lists for subsidies.
In the absence of a provincially-funded, licensed, not-for-profit daycare system, families are left with few options. The government has permitted the operation of unlicensed, home-based childcare. The tragic death of three toddlers in unregulated home daycares since 2011 exposes the need for a strong, licensed and accessible childcare system in Ontario.
