Impact: News for OPSEU members at MPAC from your leadership team
Volume 13, Issue 2 – July 18, 2013
A turn for the better
If you"re looking for a good price on one slightly-used full-length turnstile, MPAC has a deal for you.
The former barrier at the Milner location is being removed, which gets a big thumbs up from the Union.
So if you are looking to keep out undesirables (e.g. Provincial Auditors, Conservative Critics, natural gas salespeople, union reps) call MPAC and make an offer today!
Watch this space for even more great deals! Cameras and tripods used for each of the 100 day project meetings may be available soon!
Province-wide meeting stomped by Libs
The provincial government has stepped in at the last minute and quashed the planned MPAC province-wide meeting.
Apparently MPAC Chair Dan Mathieson didn"t learn any lessons from last September when he took fire from the Hudak Conservatives for the costs associated with holding such a meeting. It would appear the Wynne government managed to avert another political backlash just in the nick of time.
Not to worry. We are sure that MPAC will figure out some other way to blow taxpayer dollars, even if they have to go out of the country to do it. Speaking of which…(see Kudos Korner)

Join MPAC and see the world!
The Union wishes director Colleen Vercouteren a hearty "bon voyage" and don"t forget your sunscreen for her half-hour presentation in South Africa entitled "Training Assessors in Ontario, Canada." When the Union asked management who was paying for this trip, the Union were told "no comment." Their refusal to clarify the funding for this trip leads us to speculate that MPAC is paying for it, which wouldn"t be in line with their Victory Statement of saving $20 million.
A big shout out also goes to Laurette Sharp, Manager Corporate Communications. She gets to go to New York City on MPAC"s dime for a communications conference and the "Gold Quill Awards", which is recognition for the September 12th launch event of the 2013-2016 strategic plan (yes…the same meeting MPAC took political fire for).
Not to be outdone by those other globe trotters, MPAC"s Chief Assessor Larry Hummel is going to Scotland in September to give a 20-minute presentation at the International Property Tax Institutes International Conference.
Should be interesting to see how those expense claims get written up…¦especially if there"s an Ontario Auditor lurking around the corner.
In short
If it walks like a duck…
The employer has raised the issue of implementing part-time/seasonal work under the guise of "alternate work arrangements." Such an issue would be subject to collective bargaining, and the Union remains vehemently opposed to any such language.
Enemies within the walls?
UMC team members David Lynch and Peter McClenaghan have accepted management"s invitation to join the second phase of the Accreditation 100 day project.
Summer "Job" reading

Hotte and Chisholm re-elected
Congratulations to Mark Hotte and Thom Chisholm on their re-election to the Sector At-Large positions at the BPS elections last June.
