Little Current – The Indigenous Circle of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) have partnered with Elders of Wikwemikong Unceded First Nation to host a conference on “Cultural Reclamation and Restoration.”
Date: June 22 – 24, 2018
Place: Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre, Little Current, ON
“We chose this theme because healing and reconciliation cannot begin until Indigenous peoples re-establish full control over their communities and this includes revitalizing their languages and cultures,” said Krista Maracle, Chair of the Indigenous Circle.
Teen water protector Autumn Peltier and Elder Phyllis William, both members of Wikwemikong Unceded First Nation will together deliver the keynote address on Saturday morning. The conference will include the construction of a teepee, sacred fire, traditional ceremonies, a blanket exercise, workshops and sharing circles.
Participants in the conference will immerse themselves in Anishinaabe culture and learn ways to integrate Indigenous teachings into their work as front line workers in child welfare, corrections and other public services.
“We are proud to stand with Wikwemikong and other First Nations across Canada as they revitalize their languages and cultures,” said OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas.
