The time for climate action is now!
After decades of foot-dragging by governments and corporations, the window for limiting global warming to the United Nations target of 1.5C is closing fast. From record-setting heat waves, floods, wildfires and droughts to increasing food insecurity and famine, it’s clear that the climate crisis is real… and it’s getting worse. Meanwhile, multinational corporations rake in record profits and spare no expense in working to block the transition to a sustainable green economy.
Global Climate Strike for #PeopleNotProfit
FFFTO and allies representing students and youth groups, the labour movement, social justice organizations, environmental and faith groups, the arts, and more, are asking everyone from all walks of life to join the Global Climate Strike at Queen’s Park on September 23. The #PeopleNotProfit theme for this climate strike highlights the need for action that delivers for people, not corporations, and recognizes the critical ways that the climate crisis intersects with urgent social and economic issues, including racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, colonialism, class inequality and more. By rallying together we can build the movement for rapid decarbonization of our economy, based on the principles of Climate Justice. This means that those most affected by the climate crisis – including indigenous, racialized, working-class, gender-diverse and low-income individuals, organizations and communities – must play a central role in the movement as we plan and build a safer, greener, more just future for us all.
A Just Transition for ALL Workers and our Communities
From a labour perspective, a just transition means fighting to ensure that ALL workers – including those who will transition out of high-emitting sectors; those who work in low-carbon jobs like child-care, education, public transit, recycling and renewable energy; and workers who are currently trapped in low-wage, part-time and precarious jobs – have access to good, green, unionized jobs, and the quality public services we all need to build fair, sustainable and inclusive communities. By joining us on September 23, leaders and members can help demonstrate the strength and diversity of our movement and amplify the demand for climate justice now.
Fridays for Future Toronto’s Climate Justice Pillars
Fridays for Future’s Toronto takes an intersectional approach to achieving Climate Justice based on these six pillars: Indigenous Self-Determination; A Just Transition; Defending Land, Water and Life; Livable Futures for All; Youth Empowerment; and Uplifting and Amplifying Marginalized Communities.
