Solidarity with MGEU members at Teranet Manitoba as they increase strike activity

Public services aren’t just under attack here in Ontario – they’re under attack across the country, and Teranet Manitoba workers, members of our sibling union, the Manitoba General Employees Union (MGEU), are fighting back!OPSEU/SEFPO stands with MGEU Locals 397 and 399, who are ramping up their strike activities on July 31 to pressure Teranet Manitoba to bring a reasonable offer to the bargaining table. We know that when workers stand together and take strong collective action – that’s how we make real gains in bargaining and in our working conditions. It’s more important than ever for public sector workers across the country to support each other and stand up to governments that attack public services, and employers who attack public sector workers. We won’t back down until every worker wins!Read MGEU’s media advisory to learn more about their strike action below:

MGEU Media Advisory: MGEU Members at Teranet Increase Strike Activity

July 28, 2023(Winnipeg) MGEU members at Teranet Manitoba (MGEU Locals 397 and 399) will be ratcheting up strike activities beginning Monday, July 31st, 2023 in an effort to encourage their employer to get back to the bargaining table with a reasonable offer. The decision to proceed with strike action was taken by Teranet’s approximately 70 employees last week, and all staff has been refusing overtime since then, but there has been no meaningful movement from the employer. As a next step, all Assistant District Registrars (ADRs) and Senior Paralegals will be off the job withholding services and will be picketing beginning Monday. Staff that remain in Teranet offices will not be backfilling the work. There are 12 ADRs and two Senior Paralegals in Manitoba who are responsible for property registry and a number of responsibilities related to the ownership of land under the Real Property Act, including dealing with documents like transfers of land, mortgages, caveats, liens, and judgments. The withdrawal of these services will impact all those who may be looking to buy, sell, or mortgage land or whose documents are submitted but may not be processed.“The decision to take these members out of Teranet’s property registry offices is not a decision we ever wanted to take because we know this will affect people looking to buy and sell homes, and business owners who need these services to conduct land sales and property development,” said MGEU President Kyle Ross. “However, we have not seen movement from this employer since their last offer was overwhelmingly rejected and our members feel this step is necessary to speed up the process to get a deal so the public isn’t inconvenienced more than necessary.”Teranet’s corporate head office is located in Toronto, while Teranet Manitoba has Land Titles Office locations in Winnipeg, Morden, Brandon, Dauphin, Neepawa, and Portage La Prairie. For the immediate future, picketing will commence at Teranet Manitoba’s Winnipeg office.Picketing at 200 Graham in Winnipeg will begin at 9:30am on Monday. MGEU president Kyle Ross will be on hand to do media interviews or answer questions. Please contact the MGEU Resource Centre with questions and requests at 204-982-6438.
