A Message from our Chair
As I started to write this report, my edition 1 of Autumn View came in the mail. It was originally ready for printing in February; two postal strikes, a cyber hack and other complications have meant it needed to be updated four times, and you still received it in November, long after all the fall meetings. We have lobbied and have been assured that this issue should be out quickly. I am trying to be an optimist. The EBMs are back at the board debating the 2026 budget. As I wrote in the last Autumn View, our budget submissions did not make the budget for 2025. We have resubmitted many of those requests and have been lobbying our EBMs for Autumn View, better communication and a 2nd Retirees Conference. At OPSEU’s Convention we were loud, we had numerous resolutions passed, including attendance at future CURC Conventions as policy. That has not stopped the Retirees Division from being active, inside and outside of OPSEU. We all attended the Congress on Union Retirees Canada (CURC) Convention in June where I was elected Secretary. We have been active in educating locals without post-retirement benefits that CURC offers an affordable option when you leave the employer’s plan.I am pleased to report that Autumn View, a retirees’ conference and social media have been recommended for budget 2026 approval at convention. This is good news since last year none of our requests made the budget. But our requests for $1200 in each region to do regional activities above our 2 meetings a year were not approved. The regions you see that are more active have been able to leverage funding from the locals or the RVPs in their regions for those activities. Some locals are including a donation to the Regional Retires Division annually. If you have a project that requires funding, you would need to write a proposal and make a request to your regional locals and EBM’s.Sandra Snider
