On January 1, two new laws took effect in Ontario, ushering in important changes for all workers. The two laws are Bill 148, “A Plan for Fair Workplaces and Better Jobs”, and Bill 177 “The Stronger Fairer Ontario Act” (also known as the Elliot Lake Bill).

Toronto – Workers at four of the province’s Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) have voted 95 per cent in favour of accepting a tentative agreement reached between the employer and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).

January 11, 2018

Toronto – All 24 non-management staff at Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto (NEW) are the newest members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU). The workers voted to join OPSEU on November 23.

November 24, 2017

On May 19, 2017, the North York Women’s Shelter (NYWS) closed its doors and laid off 32 women who worked as domestic violence counsellors and support staff. The 30 shelter beds at NYWS were moved to nine shelters across Toronto, but none of the jobs moved with those beds.
