Ours To Win – Member Organizer Application
Campaign Overview: The BPS cross-sectoral bargaining campaign seeks to achieve a minimum of a 6.5 percent wage increase to catch up to what other public workers achieved. This campaign is coordinated by the BPS Working Group which includes the following sectors: Developmental Services, Children’s Aid Societies, Community Agencies, BPS Corrections, Universities, Children’s Treatment, Community Health Care Professionals, and Mental Health and Addictions.
To build bargaining power to achieve this wage increase the BPS Working Group will book off 16 member organizers to engage with members in the above noted sectors. Member organizers on book-offs will be part of a central mobilizing committee along with the Working Group and assigned staff that will develop strategic objectives to support a centralized bargaining process.
Primary Duties:
- Engage, inspire, and organize members widely across the BPS
- Work with Local Executives to build comprehensive member lists and map all Workplaces involved in the campaign
- Adhere to the OPSEU/SEFPO Statement of Respect and Constitution in all duties performed
- Identify, recruit and support leaders across the membership of the 8 sectors
- Conduct phone calls and in-person conversations where possible to recruit leaders
- Sign up folks to OPSEU/SEFPO membership and update member portal information
- Track and record campaign participation in digital databases
- Build relationships with existing and potential allies towards strategic goals
- Represent OPSEU/SEFPO with integrity and professionalism
Qualifications/ Criteria:
- Members in good standing
- Enthusiastic about talking to members and engaging them on complicated issues, by phone, in person, digitally
- Maintain organized, detailed records of their work
- Flexible and dynamic with changing priorities to meet strategic needs
- Take initiative to work independently and engage in a team environment
- Have access to a vehicle and be comfortable with travel for work
- Geographic coverage will be a key determinant factor to facilitate outreach
- French Language where possible
- Ask members to self-identify if they are racialized or other equity-seeking groups
- Technological tools and competencies (i.e. Microsoft Office, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, other digital tools where training will be provided)
Duration:
- Selected candidates will be booked-off beginning on or as close after as possible January 6th, 2025 until no later than May 30th, 2025
- Selected candidates will be booked-off 3 days per week for campaign-specific work (exclusions: local time-off for steward meetings, Local Executive/Divisional Executive work, bargaining duties, etc.)
Expense coverage*:
- Mileage
- Meals
- Overnight accommodation for outreach, if necessary
- Internet and phone expenses
*subject to approval by Political Action and Education Division (PAED)
Selection Process:
- Deadline to apply: November 28th, 2024
- Call-out to all target-sector members will remain open for 2 weeks from release date
- Developmental Services (Sector 2) has 7 elected mobilizers that will be prioritized, if they are in the target region
- 16 mobilizer positions total (with one/two alternates per sector)
- Sector chairs will provide input into the selection of applicants and OPSEU/SEFPO staff will provide a final list for review
- Selected candidates will be subject to a trial period of 3 weeks, after which member organizers, Sector leadership, and OPSEU/SEFPO staff will assess if the role is a good fit and candidates will continue to be booked off for the remainder of the campaign
