Windsor Star: Workplace review uncovers discrimination, ‘culture of fear and distrust’ at Windsor jail

The Windsor Star is reporting that a workplace review of the South-West Detention Centre in Windsor has uncovered a culture of discrimination and unfair treatment, with leadership problems severe enough to cause staff shortages. The review took place from September to November and involved interviews with more than 350 employees, including jail staff and management

In a written statement to the Star, Kiera Chion, spokesperson for OPSEU/SEFPO — the union representing correctional officers at the Windsor jail — said the union “could not agree more” with the report’s findings.

“Issues of overcrowding, understaffing, and a complex inmate population that includes individuals struggling with mental health or addictions issues, have only been exacerbated by the inconsistent leadership within management,” Chion said.
