On behalf of Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida, First Vice-President/Treasurer of OPSEU, and the entire Executive Board, I’d like to wish a very warm welcome back to all returning seasonal members of the OPS (Ontario Public Service).
I hope this year’s work term will be very rewarding, not just financially, but in every aspect: from the new skills you may acquire to the new friends you may make. And remember, we have your backs: as your union representatives, our job is to do everything possible to support you in your work and your workplace.
In that regard, I remind you that your health, safety, and well-being must be your first concern. If you feel you’re being asked to perform unsafe work, work in an unsafe workplace, or work without the appropriate tools and necessary protections, speak to your health and safety representative without delay. In fact, find out now who they are and get to know them. The same goes if you believe you’re the object of harassment or discrimination: talk to your steward immediately.
This year is a bargaining year for OPS workers, so I’d also like to remind you about the Regional Bargaining Conference coming up on Saturday, May 27. During the conference, your regional and category representatives will be elected to attend the Central Bargaining Conference on June 10, where your Unified bargaining team will be elected.
Make no mistake: you are an important part of the bargaining process. I strongly encourage you to keep in touch or contact your steward, local president, or regional bargaining representative. Stay informed on what’s happening in bargaining. Because bargaining affects you and those who depend on you. Get involved – it’s about your future.
I wish you a very enjoyable and safe summer!
In solidarity,
Warren (Smokey) Thomas
President of OPSEU
