Front-line supportive housing workers in Toronto are OPSEU/SEFPO’s newest members after the Fred Victor Centre took over the operations of the former Toronto Christian Resource Centre (CRC).

“On behalf of all 180,000 of our members across Ontario, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new members from the former Toronto Christian Resource Centre,” said OPSEU/SEFPO President Warren (Smokey) Thomas.

“We’re incredibly proud these front-line heroes are joining us, and I’m confident they’ll quickly learn why OPSEU/SEFPO has always prided itself on being a members-first union.”

When Fred Victor took over CRC operations last December, its workers belonged to another union. Since there were more than 10 times as many OPSEU/SEFPO members at Fred Victor, the parties decided that the CRC workers should join OPSEU/SEFPO too.

“It’s not always easy to get a new employer, and it’s not always easy to join a new union,” said OPSEU/SEFPO First Vice-President/Treasurer Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida. “But I want these former CRC workers to know that there’s a reason we’re one of the fast-growing unions in the country: we’re also one of the strongest unions in the country.

“And now that they’ve joined, we’re even stronger.”
