Tentative deal reached at Geneva Centre for Autism

Members of OPSEU Local 548 and management for the Geneva Centre for Autism have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract in marathon negotiations that ended early this morning.

“We were looking at a lockout starting Oct. 29, but I’m pleased to report that was averted as a result of our tentative settlement,” said Taryn Persaud, chair of the bargaining team that represents about 75 members at Geneva Centre.

The bargaining team is recommending acceptance of the deal when members meet on Oct. 29 to vote. Their previous contract expired Dec. 31, 2009.

Labour relations at the centre had become acrimonious in recent weeks following allegations of interference in union activities, misinformation by management to members, coercion and intimidation against staff. Both sides were scheduled to appear today at the Ontario Labour Relations Board after the union filed an unfair labour practice charge. That hearing has now been cancelled.
