Youth justice workers at St. Lawrence Youth Association in Kingston held an information picket Tuesday, August 11 to protest their employer’s unwillingness to negotiate a fair contract.

30 members from Local 427 were on hand to sound the alarm over their employer’s proposal to freeze wages, slash benefits and make significant cuts to sick leave, bereavement leave and overtime entitlements.

“The fact that we’ve only received a $1.55 increase in the last 14 years speaks volumes about how the staff are valued and how our work is valued in the eyes of the employer,” said Local 427 vice-president Cindy Filman.

Workers at St. Lawrence Youth Association provide vital counseling and community support services to young persons in conflict with the law.
