Training Series Goal

To deepen understanding of the complexities of systemic racism as it intersects with multiple identities; increase competencies on interrupting and transforming those dynamics; and develop insights on how to make meaningful changes in a multiracial environment.

Training Series Objectives

  • Increase participants’ understanding of racial discrimination and harassment in work and union environments
  • Advance skills to provide critical peer support throughout race-based complaints during a grievance and mediation process
  • Develop strategies to effectively interrupt racial discrimination and manage resistance in the workplace or/and among union members

Dates: Friday, December 9 (9 am – 4 pm) & Friday, December 16 (9 am – 4 pm)

Format: Virtual via Zoom

Day One Theme – Setting the Landscape

Areas of Focus:

  • Key human rights, equity and antiracism terms
  • Legislative implications for human rights and equity change work
  • Overview of OPSEU/SEFPO Harassment and Discrimination Prevention Policy

Day Two Theme –Critical Support and Human Rights Complaints

Areas of Focus:

  • Tools for providing critical support during race-based complaints
  • Deepening accountability to intersectional antiracism change work
  • Role of mentorship in addressing systemic racism – learning from past lessons in the antiracism movement
  • Vision for the year ahead

Workshop Facilitators are Jodie Glean-Mitchell and Nancy Simms with REACT – Race Equity Advisory Consulting & Training.

This workshop is for OPSEU/SEFPO members in Region 5. Register no later than 5pm on Monday, November 21, 2022 to the OPSEU/SEFPO Equity Unit at [email protected] and include a statement on why you want to attend this training.  If applicable, please also indicate any work that you’re currently doing to dismantle anti-Black racism in your union, workplaces and/or communities.

Space is limited to 30 participants.  You must be available to attend both sessions.  Selection will be based on a first come, first served basis.
