Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay TSSA #StrikeforSafety hits the news

Strike for safety

OPSEU/SEFPO Local 546 TSSA safety inspectors had picket lines across the province this week, and the media was there for it!

The Sault Ste. Marie and District Labour Council and TSSA strikers organized a rally at MPP Ross Romano’s office after a propane explosion rocked the city a few days earlier. Safety inspectors explained to reporters from SaultOnline, CTV News and SooToday why their work is so important.

“’We would verify that any equipment is still safe to operate, and we can’t verify if that’s been done or not. That large storage tank that’s there may not be safe to operate,’ said local inspector Mark Bernard, referring to the weekend Propane Depot incident.”

When safety inspectors picketed Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli’s constituency office in North Bay, Regional Vice President Tara Maszczakiewicz told, “We’re making sure that people in Ontario know that inspectors are not regularly inspecting elevators, ski lift equipment, amusement rides, or any fuel sources. They’re not being inspected by TSSA inspectors because the employer walked away from the bargaining table.”

The #StrikeforSafety hit Toronto, Ancaster, Scarborough, Strathroy, Sault Ste. Marie, Brockville, North Bay, Markham, Windsor, and Sudbury this week. Click here for our full picket schedule for the coming week!
