Ontario Ranger alumni and supporters are continuing their campaign to bring back the Ontario Ranger Program, cancelled by the Liberal government in 2012. Former Ontario Rangers will be hosting a park cleanup day April 26 in Toronto at Trinity Bellwoods Park, and in Ottawa at Confederation Park.
The cleanup in both cities is scheduled for 10 am to noon.
All participants will receive a free T-shirt and a chance to win a North Face tent.
The Ontario Ranger Program, formerly known as the Ontario Junior Forest Ranger Program, provided an opportunity for young workers to gain first-hand knowledge of resource management through a work and learning experience. More than 78,000 Ontario youth have participated in the 70-year old program.
In September 2012, and without prior public consultation, the program was abruptly cancelled and replaced with a watered-down imitation of the original program.
