Members of Locals 677, 706, 720, 732, 736 and 740 heard the call from Eco Divers Thunder Bay and used their Saturday to clear refuse from Fisherman’s Park and from the waters of the mouth of the Current River, which flows into Lake Superior.
They were supported by EcoSuperior, a non-profit organization dedicated to cleaning up Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area. The effort was also promoted by Project AWARE, another non-profit with a mission to protect the world’s oceans, with a focus on marine litter.
September 21 was chosen to coincide with World Cleanup Day and Coastal Cleanup Day, when volunteers worldwide help rid our planet of litter and waste from waterways, beaches, forests and streets.
Bravo to the members who took part in this important activity! It shows once again that OPSEU is the union that works for all Ontarians.
