OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas has issued the following statement on Kathleen Wynne’s announcement this weekend conceding defeat in next Thursday’s election:
I agree with Kathleen Wynne that the danger of Premier Doug Ford remains strong, but I am saddened by her audacity in suggesting the best way to block him from a majority government is to show some mercy to a few Liberals who have a shot at re-election.
True progressives must unite around the New Democrats this Thursday and I am disappointed that Wynne is trying to set herself up as the power behind the throne in a minority government.
OPSEU is non-partisan and doesn’t judge political parties based on their labels. In this election we drafted our own platform called Vote Better so we can compare our priorities with what the parties are promising.
The heart of our platform is strong, properly funded public services and we have concluded the party that comes closest to that is the NDP.
What Doug Ford offers to Ontario is worse than a B-grade horror movie that we hope won’t be coming soon to a theatre near you.
We at OPSEU know all too well what’s at stake, but I’m urging the members of all other unions and voters who value our public services to vote for Andrea Horwath and the NDP, the only choice for progressive Ontarians.
