Last month, members of OPSEU/SEFPO Local 542 Ferrovial Services Canada Highway Maintenance gathered to vote on the ratification of their first contract and to honour the memory bargaining team member Paul Soave.

Paul Soave was remembered by his colleagues as a kind-hearted, passionate and dedicated advocate for workers’ rights.

“He was an integral part of the bargaining team and will be missed dearly. His loss has greatly impacted us all and we are extremely saddened by his sudden passing.” said bargaining team Chair Myles Scott. “We offer our deepest sympathies to his family and to all of his loved ones.”

OPSEU/SEFPO Local 542 Ferrovial Services Canada Highway Maintenance is a composite local that includes 60 members who work in two separate units in Peel and York regions.

Highlights of the two three-year contracts include: the employer to make corrections to payroll errors; increase to sick days; additional float holiday for full-time; recognition of seniority for time worked as seasonal; and unused vacation time to be paid on a separate cheque.

“I would like to congratulate the members of OPSEU/SEFPO Local 542 on their first contract and thank the bargaining team for all their hard work to negotiate these gains,” said OPSEU/SEFPO president JP Hornick. “We are all saddened by the loss of Paul Soave and remain ever grateful for his hard work and advocacy on behalf of his colleagues. Our thoughts are with his co-workers, the bargaining team, and his friends and family at this difficult time.”
