OPSEU/SEFPO celebrated this week’s win for workers, alongside the labour movement and the 40+ applicants that filed a constitutional challenge against the Ford government’s Bill 124, as the Superior Court of Justice declared Bill 124 “void and of no effect”.
Bill 124, introduced by the Ford government in 2019, capped public sector workers’ wage increases in bargaining to one per cent – well below the rate of inflation. The unions argued that the bill violated workers’ right to freedom of association and substantially, and unjustifiably, interfered with collective bargaining rights. On Wednesday, Justice Markus Koehnen ruled in favour of the unions’ position.
