OPSEU seeks new member rep for OMERS

The OPSEU Pension Liaison Committee invites you or someone you know to get involved with OMERS, by applying to be an OPSEU Representative on the Sponsors Corporation. OMERS is the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System.

The appointment for the OPSEU Sponsor Representative on the OMERS Sponsors Corporation (SC) is effective January 1, 2017 until December 31, 2019. Applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 2016.

With the challenges facing defined benefit pension plans, we need people who have a firm and deep commitment to the labour movement and union principles, as well as an understanding of pension plans, good governance practices, and the legal framework surrounding pensions.

SC meetings generally take place for at least three days every two months plus extra days when sitting on committees. Expenses are reimbursed according to the OPSEU policy.

Who should apply?

We are looking for individuals who have:

  • knowledge and commitment to OPSEU’s beliefs and pension policy

  • good understanding of defined benefit pension plans

  • knowledge of the OMERS, particularly the Sponsors Corporation

  • knowledge of financial matters related to pension plans

  • knowledge of what constitutes good governance

  • demonstrated ability to understand complex issues

  • ability to perform as an OPSEU Sponsor Representative at caucus, committees and full board meetings

  • a large commitment of time

  • ability to effectively communicate, ask questions and defend one’s position

  • experience in pension plans, union and/or community
