Warren (Smokey) Thomas was in Pembroke Thursday to kick off the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s (MNRF) 43rd Annual Hockey Tournament.
"Only you can prevent privatization."
OPSEU was once again pleased to be a sponsor of the 45-team event. “It’s an honour and a privilege to represent so many hardworking and truly dedicated MNRF members, the OPSEU President said in his remarks to assembled players, dignitaries, and spectators.
“Your ministry is unique. I’ve personally experienced that on many occasions – at special events, like this wonderful tournament, and in the tasks you perform for Ontarians every, single day.”
In addition to the competition itself, organizers planned a number of activities, including live music, and social and fundraising events.
Thomas noted that the tournament was in character with the ministry’s special culture. “You have a well-deserved reputation for your fun-loving, outgoing nature, and infectious enthusiasm. I always get the feeling you’re a big but close-knit family.”
The OPSEU President assured everyone present that he would continue to vigorously oppose any attempt to cut or outsource services the MNRF provides.
“You’re an absolutely key and indispensable part of the public realm, protecting invaluable public assets,” Thomas affirmed. “We at OPSEU intend on keeping them that way – public.”
