OPSEU Local 248 represents more than 200 correctional officers and support staff at Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre (HWDC). Eighty correctional officers are on duty at any given time.
Local 248 and management continue a standoff with regard to a health & safety and disciplinary dispute. Officers are demanding that they be allowed to wear their protective vests while searching for missing metal objects in the facility. Management has inexplicably denied this request, and are refusing to allow officers in the facility until the officers back down on their demands.

Currently the standoff continues, with management insisting that officers receive discipline for wanting to protect their own safety.
The union is adamant that officers be allowed to return to work without disciplinary measures. Our members must have the ability to stand up for health and safety in the workplace with no reprisals.
