OPSEU President Warren (Smokey)Thomas is quoted in a Toronto Sun article about correctional officers represented by OPSEU who were attacked at the Toronto South Detention Centre last Saturday night.
“It was a sneak attack,” he said. “Many were hurt and it could have been worse.”
Ontario’s correctional officers face serious risks every day – many of which are preventable. As a result of the attack, more than 200 officers took a stand by refusing to perform non-essential work for several hours on Monday. Thomas also invited Premier Ford to tour the jail so he can “see the risks for himself.”
Thomas continues to call on the Ford government to hire more officers to prevent attacks like this from happening in the future – a move he says would undoubtedly prevent future injuries and even death.
