Corrections denied disclosure requests
The Corrections Bargaining team met with the employer on Tuesday, March 17 to begin the Essential and Emergency Services negotiations process.
In their opening statement, the employer provided disclosure that in the event of a labour disruption they would be considering “temporary suspension of operations” at both the Brantford and Stratford Jails. The team was told that inmates would be transferred to one of three institutions (Elgin-Middlesex D.C., Hamilton-Wentworth D.C. and Maplehurst Correctional Complex). Further, during the labour disruption, staff would be redeployed to institutions within a 125 KM radius for emergency and essential services. The team made the employer aware that this was not acceptable and would create serious health and safety issues in already overcrowded institutions.
The team also made requests for relevant information and disclosure from the employer. On March 18, the employer refused to comply with our requests. The employer stated that our requests were “overly broad and extensive and undermined the bargaining process.”
The team has informed the employer that since our requests for disclosure were denied we would be filing a dispute at the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
