The Pension Liaison Committee invites you or someone you know to get involved with OMERS by applying to become an OPSEU/SEFPO Representative on the Sponsors Corporation.
We require your assistance in helping us to find suitable candidates for the position of Sponsor Representative. The appointment for the OPSEU/SEFPO Sponsor Representative on the OMERS Sponsors Corporation is effective Fall 2021 until December 31, 2024.
With the challenges facing defined benefit pension plans, we need people who have a firm and deep commitment to the labour movement and union principles.
SC representatives are generally required to meet for three days every other month, and participate on at least one committee of the SC. In addition, attendance at various pension-related activities, including training sessions, is also required.
Time off is provided, and expenses are reimbursed according to OPSEU/SEFPO policy. The successful candidate must be willing to sign a letter of agreement that they will follow OPSEU/SEFPO policies. The successful candidate must also agree to a background check.
Who should apply?
We are looking for individuals who ideally have, or who are willing to gain:
- Knowledge and commitment to OPSEU/SEFPO’s beliefs and pension policy;
- An understanding of defined benefit pension plans and the pension legislation that governs them; and
- An understanding of basic actuarial principles and good corporate governance practices.
Must haves for the position are:
- The ability to commit to preparing for and attending at least twelve meetings per year, as well as committee work;
- A strong desire to learn more about pension plans and the pension landscape, good governance practices, investments; and
- The ability to effectively communicate, ask questions and defend one’s position in a persuasive manner.
Applicants must also be actively participating in OMERS and be a member in good standing with OPSEU/SEFPO. Applicants need not have experience in pension plans. Experience and participation in the union movement and/or their community will also be considered. Once appointed, training opportunities are provided by the plan.
