Northern media coverage of Corrections “Respect” action this week

The North Bay Nugget and KenoraOnline reported on OPSEU/SEFPO’s corrections, youth justice, and probation and parole members’ “Respect” action, calling out the Ontario government’s disrespectful delay tactics in bargaining.

The North Bay Nugget interviewed Correctional Bargaining Team chair Janet Laverty, and Scott McIntyre, bargaining team member.

Laverty said workers are frustrated at the employer delaying bargaining by several more months. She explained how comparatively low wages make it difficult to recruit and retain staff, creating an understaffing crisis across the entire correctional and youth justice system. McIntyre elaborated on the recruitment and retention problems in Ontario’s probation and parole system due to wages that are non-competitive with federal parole officers.
