On March 26 to March 28, 2019 and April 2 to 4, 2019, two new groups of local Presidents received an overview of how the Ontario Public Service Employees Union functions on an everyday basis.
The new Presidents participated in networking sessions where they developed strategies to build an involved membership while analyzing some practical case scenarios.
They also got the opportunity to hone their skills to take on the challenging work of protecting and enhancing their members’ interests in this time of austerity measures.
They analyzed everyday situations and developed ideas for strengthening their current steward structure. They discussed ways to mobilize their locals and shared some leadership skills and strategic approaches to deal with everyday employer tactics.
Local Presidents had the opportunity to meet with staff members from the different departments of OPSEU where they got first-hand information on how these departments function and where to go for help when needed.
The local Presidents met with OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas and Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida, First Vice President/Treasurer, who thanked them for taking on their new role.
The local presidents indicated that they now have a better understanding of OPSEU’s resources, know where to go for help and how to access pertinent information from OPSEU’s website.
