If our co-workers have joined a strong union like OPSEU/SEFPO, why not us?

That’s the question Home Support Workers at the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care in Mississauga were asking themselves last week when they voted on becoming members of OPSEU/SEFPO.

A clear majority voted yes, and the Mississauga Yee Hong Home Support workers have now joined their colleagues at four other locations in Toronto.

“For nearly two years, these front-line workers have been courageously putting their own health and safety on the line,” said OPSEU/SEFPO President Warren (Smokey) Thomas. “They know that seniors are depending on them, and they’ve never let those seniors down.

“Today, I’d like to welcome our members — OPSEU/SEFPO will never let you down.”

The newest OPSEU/SEFPO members provide high-quality and culturally appropriate care and services to the residents of Yee Hong Centre Coral Place in Mississauga, many of whom are Chinese.

“I’m so proud that the Yee Hong Centre Home Support workers in Mississauga have voted to put their faith and their trust in us,” said OPSEU/SEFPO First Vice-President/Treasurer Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida. “And as I said to the other Yee Hong Centre Home Support workers who joined us earlier this year, I’d like to say: 欢迎加入我们的工会大家庭 – welcome to our union family!”
