On November 10, 2022, guest host Derick Fage of City News’ The Sam Laprade Show discussed the implications of Queensway Carleton Hospital’s decision to let go an in-house psychologist.
Melissa Coenraad, 1st Vice-President of OPSEU/SEFPO Local 491 and Region 4 Regional Vice-President, appeared as a guest on the show and expressed her concern for the loss of mental health services, and the actions taken by the employer after receiving $9 million dollars in funding last year to expand QCH’s mental health unit.
“When you are coming for mental health challenges, then you have to seek out these resources on your own, it’s a problem,” said Coenraad. “Social workers are very concerned to send these patients home with a pamphlet instead of booking them a few appointments to try and further stabilize them.”
