Local 662 averts walkout; ratifies new contract

With the clock ticking down to 12:01 strike deadline today, workers at Nipissing Mental Health Housing and Support Services reached a tentative agreement with their employer. The deal was ratified later this morning at a meeting of the membership, represented by OPSEU Local 662.

The tentative agreement was reached with the assistance of a mediator who joined the talks on Aug. 14.

"Our members came together through this process with an exceptional amount of solidarity," said Laura Elvish, chair of the bargaining team. "The bargaining team could not have made the gains made in this contract without the overwhelming support from our members. Moving forward, we are more united than ever before."

The new contract calls for improvements for auto-use, including a small increase in mileage rates. Workers also saw improvements to their benefits' package. The employees, who had turned down an earlier tentative contract on July 24, provide clients with skills training, medication support and supply many of their transportation needs.
