OPSEU members come from diverse nations and cultures. A sizable community of members, with friends and relatives in South East Asia, are now facing hardship as they try to make contact with those effected by Super-Typhoon Haiyan. The thoughts and hopes of all OPSEU members go to those directly affected.
Whether we have a connection to the affected regions or not, we feel the need to respond in some way to this emergency. This compassion is a shared core value. We are fortunate to live in a place where disasters like this are few and far between. We have also fought to maintain public services, resources and people qualified and able to respond when problems arise.
At this critical time money is needed to relieve the hardship we see in the areas destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan. The best approach to giving is through personal donations, as they will be matched with funds from the federal government. Unlike donations from central bodies and corporations, personal funds get this multiplier. Also, when you donate through a charity, you will receive a tax receipt.
Working people across Canada are giving generously. Please do the same! Let’s join the campaign underway through the Canadian Labour Congress. Click here to contribute through OXFAM. (Or if you prefer you can also make donations through other organizations like the Canadian Red Cross.)
Thanks!
